Do you organise team building events, and if so, how are they received?

Interestingly, team building events have garnered a somewhat negative reputation among certain individuals. Upon inquiry, it became apparent that many employees harbour unfavourable perceptions of such activities.

A brief retrospective examination suggests that the team building events of the 80s and 90s left lasting impressions, with memories of trusting strangers, unconventional challenges (such as being carried by unknown colleagues or navigating freezing water), and experiences reminiscent of reality TV shows like The Apprentice.

The problem with past team building events lay in their failure to account for diverse personalities and demographics, not to mention a lack of consideration for the underlying purpose of these gatherings.

Does your team building approach attract or repel?

Your primary role as a leader is to inspire the best in your team, not to subject them to embarrassment. Research conducted by YouGov revealed that the rise of fun team building activities in the 70s and 80s ultimately proved to be a waste of time.

At Berrison, we specialise in crafting tailor-made activities that bring people together in unique ways. Drawing from extensive experience with individuals and teams, we design programs and activities that genuinely engage participants in a focused and enjoyable manner.

So, what constitutes effective team building?

We firmly believe it must serve a purpose, furthermore not merely for the sake of having an event. Berrison’s approach involves creating experiences that reflect the business and its culture. By understanding our clients’ needs, we can design activities that make a real impact, whether it’s fostering productivity, improving communication, or enhancing time management.

Effective team building doesn’t always require extravagant locations. Depending on the nature of the business, local venues can be just as effective. The key is in the content, and events need not be lengthy; a two-hour session can be ample.

How do you ensure everyone is pleased?

Thorough planning is the key. Berrison events incorporate roles and responsibilities that subconsciously appeal to different personality traits, ensuring that no one feels uncomfortable during the session. For that reason, everyone is actively involved, and no one is left on the sidelines.

Maximising the impact involves follow-up events or revisits to reinforce the learning and its relevance to the business. Ultimately, team events should contribute to a more focused, self-aware, and productive team.
