Action learning sets are a simple and powerful way for individuals to learn from each other.
This is a process which involves working on real challenges, using the knowledge and skills of a small group of people combined with skilled questioning, to produce fresh ideas and reinterpret familiar concepts.
What are the benefits
Action learning sets typically consist of a small group of individuals, often ranging from 4 to 8 participants. This size allows for effective collaboration and meaningful interaction among members. The primary focus of action learning is to address real and complex problems faced by the participants or their organisations.
The emphasis on practical problem-solving distinguishes it from other learning approaches. Action learning emphasises reflection on both individual and group experiences. Participants are encouraged to explore their assumptions, challenge existing perspectives, and learn from their actions and the actions of others.
Members of the action learning set serve as coaches to one another. Through questioning and active listening, participants help each other gain insights, generate solutions, and develop a deeper understanding of the challenges at hand. Action learning is an iterative process where participants take action, reflect on the outcomes, and then adjust their actions accordingly.
These cycles repeats as the group collectively learns from each iteration. The ultimate goal of action learning is to drive positive change. Participants commit to implementing solutions and applying their learning to improve the situation or solve the identified problem.
Facilitation
A facilitator, often referred to as a “set advisor,” guides the action learning process. The facilitator helps the group maintain focus, encourages reflection, and ensures that the learning remains relevant and applicable. Members of an action learning set typically agree to maintain confidentiality within the group.
This creates a safe space for open and honest dialogue about challenges and potential solutions.
Action learning sets are used in various contexts, including leadership development programs, management training, and organisational change initiatives. The approach is particularly effective for promoting a culture of continuous learning and fostering creative problem-solving skills among participants.
